Day 351 - July 31, 2010

I'm feeling a little bit like Uncle Jesse from Full House today. Take a trip back with me to 1993. Uncle Jesse had just inherited an old night club which he decided to re-open and name The Smash Club. In this particular episode, Uncle Jesse had many difficult decisions to make regarding the new look of The Smash Club. One of those decisions being which colour of toilet to choose for the new washrooms. Toilets of all colours lined the Tanner's family room. A pink one, a yellow one, a red one, a black one, and so on. Uncle Jesse spent hours looking at and sitting on the toilets trying to determine the best choice for his club. As I recall, he chose black!

Well, I'm not opening a club, but I am in the market for a new toilet. The toilets in our house are the originals from over 25 years ago. They are looking a little tired and use far too much water with every flush. It's time to replace them with one of those fancy-pants dual flush toilets. So this afternoon, I'll be looking at toilets, sitting on toilets, and flushing toilets in hopes of making the best decision for our home. But unlike Uncle Jesse, I'll be sticking with white!

Day 350 - July 30, 2010

My plan for today was to get some photos of my 3-year-old nephew holding my latest DIY project, but my tired sweetheart made it very clear he was not up for a photoshoot. So we improvised and Micah decided he would like to be the one behind the lens today. Enjoy!

Day 347 - July 27, 2010

I WISH YOU ENOUGH.

• I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
• I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
• I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
• I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
• I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
• I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
• I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final goodbye.

Day 346 - July 26, 2010

You see this man?

This man is working 65 hours a week, 2,608 miles away

while I enjoy sweet summer days with family back home.

This man spends 12 hours a day, 6 days a week in an office

while I spend my time hanging around the park.

This man works tirelessly and without complaint to provide for our family

so that one day my dream of stay-at-home motherhood can come true.

This man is my hero.

Thank you for everything that you do. I miss you, babe!

John 16:32

A time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

Day 342 - July 22, 2010

It's been a while since I've photographed anyone other than babies and toddlers. So it was refreshing to shoot a beautiful group of friends last night. How nice it was to photograph a group that had an attention span of longer than 4 minutes. There was no bribing with M&Ms, although there was some bubble gum involved. I didn't need to clap my hands or play peek-a-boo to get their attention, although I did find myself counting to 3. There was no "Please take your hands out of your mouth" but I did find myself saying, "You may want to close your legs." But in all honesty, I had a blast with these beautiful women. Their laughter is contagious and their friendship is inspiring.

Day 335 - July 15, 2010

I read something earlier this week that really resonated with me and has come to mind countless times over the past few days. Remember that book I was telling you about a few months ago, Strong Women, Soft Hearts? Well, I was reading the chapter about living beyond fear the other night and realized just how much I struggle with that. The author talks a bit about the negative voices in our heads that turn on when we walk toward our fears. Believe it or not, this blog is just one big fear. I struggle almost daily with the voices in my head that say, Why do you even bother writing? You know you don't have anything valid to say. Your words are surely not going to make a difference. And your photographs, they will never come close to being as good as that photographer you admire. Who do you think you are?

I don't write these things to throw a pity party for myself or in hopes that some of you will leave kind words of encouragement in the comment section. (Honestly, please don't. It will probably have the voices in my head saying,
They only commented because you said not to. You know their words aren't genuine.) I write this as a way of tackling one of my many fears.

As Paula Reinhart said, "...
fear can literally unlock the creativity and passion in our hearts--if we are willing to walk into it with a bit of courage." So today, I am attempting to confront one of my fears with courage by proclaiming it here in writing. Today, I will embrace what my father told me on Day 262, "Andrea, you have significant and valuable things to say. Fight those doubts and say what's on your mind. You are observant, articulate, and keen. Share you insights and have fun!"

Day 332 - July 12, 2010

Do you have company coming? Are you looking for a change? Or are you just plan sick of your current decor? Try this simple fix.

Buy some inexpensive black frames (Remember: Ikea is a great store for all sizes of reasonably priced picture frames). Find some nice photographs from a recent vacation or head outside and capture some great nature shots with your camera. Play around with cropping your image and focusing on one aspect of your larger photo. Print your photos out in black and white or a beautiful antiqued finish depending on your space. Opt for colour photographs if you're hanging them on white walls. Put the photos in the frames and hang! It's as easy as that. Switch out the pictures every couple of months to bring new life to your tired space!

This simple little face lift is inexpensive, but it makes a world of difference.

Remember: Black frames and/or black and white photographs are like a little black dress. Necessary to every interior wardrobe!
