Day 412 - September 30, 2010

With everything that's been going on around here lately, it's time for a catch up post.

Earlier this month, I mentioned big changes and big decisions and I am thankful to say that most of those big decisions have been made. After receiving 4 job offers (he really is that talented), my husband, Greg, took an offer to work for Sony Pictures Imageworks. I'll try to tell you more about that project when I can, but for now our focus is on Disney's Tangled. This movie is going to be incredible. I can't wait to see it! There will be many more Tangled posts to come I'm sure. I am so proud of my husband for his dedication to this movie and cannot wait to walk the red carpet with him at the premiere in a few weeks. Stay tuned for that post as well.

With Greg's time at Disney Animation quickly coming to an end, Disney is pulling out the big guns to make their employees (and their employees wives) happy. Tuesday night, they brought in caterers that served up fresh lobster flown in from Boston. According to the caterer, those lobsters go for $100 a pop! And my husband, being the nervous seafood eater that he is, refused to try it. On the plus side, he brought a huge lobster dinner home for me. I guess I can't say he never makes dinner.

Speaking of good food, I'm sure there are about 3 of you out there wondering what ever happened to the little sweet basil garden I planted back in April. Well, I had about 6 strong stalks growing at the beginning of the summer, but when I took off for Canada for over a month, my husband managed to kill all of them. I worked so hard at reviving one tiny withered plant and am happy to say that with a lot of love and sunshine, my single stalk is thriving. Reminds me of Jack and the Beanstalk. It smells delicious and I look forward to homemade fresh pesto in the near future. After seeing my success with the basil, my hubby now questions why I haven't started growing all of our food.

It rained yesterday for the first time since March (maybe early April). Well, I guess you can't really call it rain when it lightly sprinkles for no more than 5 minutes. The thunder and lighting had us all thinking we were in for a downpour, but no such luck. It sprinkled just enough to give the air that first Spring rain smell. It reminded me of home and it was glorious!

So, we're beginning our long trek across the country this weekend. We'll make it home in time to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with our family. We're praying for safety, dry roads, and that our car can handle another 3000 mile trip. I'll try to update you as I can. If my hubby has his way, we'll be stopping at every CiCi's Pizza Buffet along the way. Luckily, they have free Wi-Fi so while he gets his fill of pizza, I'll be emailing family to let them know where we are.

Oops! I accidentally let the cat out of the bag early last night. If you subscribe to my feed, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, tune in tomorrow to find out! You won't be disappointed.

Day 410 - September 28, 2010

I am usually a lover of anything chocolate. Cupcakes, cookies, brownies, you name it, but last week, a switch flipped in my brain and the thought of anything sweet makes me want to gag. I've developed an obsession with salt. From fries and potato chips to peanuts and pretzels, I just can't get enough. If you must know, I am currently eating Parmesan and Garlic Focaccia Croutons straight out of the bag. It was the only thing I could think of to reach for since I already polished off the remains of a bag of salt and vinegar chips. At least bathing suit season is over. Or is it ever really over when you live in California? Anyway, this new obsession has worked out really well for my hubby who didn't complain once that I left the entire double chocolate cookie crumble cake just for him!

Day 409 - September 27, 2010

I am so thankful that God has given us some clarity. Big decisions have been made and our long to-do list is getting shorter each day. A week from now, we'll be on the road heading home to see the family we love and miss. I can almost feel my sweet nephew's arms around my neck. I have lots of hugs and kisses to catch up on.

Oh, and I'm also so thankful for air conditioning today as the temperature reached a record breaking 113 degrees! I honestly felt like my skin was going to melt off. Either that or I would spontaneously burst into flames. I think I'll stay inside from now on.

Day 408 - September 26, 2010

James 1: 5-6

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

Day 407 - September 25, 2010

I wish I had something exciting or insightful to share with you, but today my mind is on cars. I can't stop thinking about all the decisions we need to make and all the things that need to be done in the next week. I don't think I've shared with you that we're planning another drive across the country all the way from California, USA to Ontario, Canada. We have some things we need to take care of that can only be done in Ontario and require crossing the border once again. We need to decide whether or not to buy a car, sell our current vehicle, register our car in California, switch ownership, renew lisence plates, import a vehicle, find a new insurance provider, and the list goes on. Just when you think you have everything figured out, life throws you a curve ball...or ten. So today, I'm praying for clarity. I'm praying for guidance and I'm praying that we make the best decisions in the coming week.

Day 405 - September 23, 2010

Oh my goodness! Look who just showed up on my door step begging to join my ever expanding family of kitchen appliances. Thanks to a recent giveaway, I am now the proud owner of a Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer Express!

I cannot believe my luck these days. It might be time to start playing the lotto. Just kidding! I think I'll stick to making tasty grilled paninis and delicious fresh fruit and vegetable juices.

Day 403 - September 21, 2010

Alright, I know you've all been anxiously awaiting this moment. It's time to reveal my red carpet experience. But let me start from the beginning.

Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending ABC's Red Carpet Premiere Event on the Disney studio lot. Just one of the many perks of having a talented husband who works at Disney Animation Studios. The event began with gift bags. Who doesn't love a gift bag? I mean, seriously. It doesn't matter that the bag was filled with little items like pens, key chains, chapstick, magazines, water bottles, pill dispensers, lunch bags, and Snoopy plush toys. The fact of the matter is, receiving a gift bag makes you feel important; like a celebrity. Well, either that or a guest at a 3-year-old's birthday party.

After gift bags, we moved on to some games where we won Coke products, Krispy Kreme donuts, and best of all the complete DVD series of ABC's hit show FlashForward!

Later, we took pictures with the cast of Desperate Housewives. Okay, so they cropped us into a photo with them, but it was still this housewife's dream come true!

So, which ABC stars showed up to walk the red carpet and answer all of my burning questions? Elizabeth, Natalie, Dave, Tenley, and Kiptyn from Bachelor Pad!

You die-hard fans will notice that Elizabeth went back to being a brunette and I wasn't afraid to tell her that dark hair is her friend and that there should be no more blonde locks in her future.

Dave was a sweetheart who's piercing blue eyes had all the women swooning. I wasn't afraid to tell him that either.

Kiptyn and Tenley were as sweet as can be and were very affectionate, even refering to themselves as "KipTen" a few times.

Oh, and these folks from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition stopped by too.

The End

Day 402 - September 20, 2010

So, I know I promised to reveal my recent red carpet experience, but there is something that in my mind tops any celebrity encounter. "What is it?", you might ask. Now this may sound silly to some of you, but I discovered something at Costco this afternoon that has my heart-pounding and my stomach flipping for joy. Feast your eyes on this...

An enormous bag of sweet potato fries!

I started on a mission to create the perfect sweet potato fry earlier this year and well, that was sort of a bust. Homemade sweet potato fries never come out of the oven as crisp as the store bought kind. In the grocery stores around here, you can buy a tiny bag with less than 2 servings in it for about $4.00. So you can imagine the hallelujah moment I had in Costco when I saw this supersize bag for only $5.99!! The perfect sweet potato fry may just be the closest thing to heaven. (Sigh) Life doesn't get much better than this!

James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Day 400 - September 18, 2010

After a very full, but fun week of entertaining, our apartment, once again, looks empty and I can't help but think, "It's so quiet in here." A week ago, I was quite content to be alone in our little apartment with my computer and TV to keep me company while hubby worked long hours, but now I feel a little bit lonely. I know life will very quickly go back to normal and I'll soon forget what it was like to do anything more than enter giveaways, make meals, and catch up on old episodes of "Nip/Tuck" during the day. I have a few exciting things to share next week, but for now I'll try to just enjoy the silence.

Come back next week to find out what this red carpet is all about.

Day 398-399 - September 16-17, 2010

It was fun to experience Disneyland through the eyes of a little girl yesterday. The day was filled with sparkly face paint, fairy wings, princess dresses, and meet and greets with Belle, Ariel, and Cinderella. What a magical day!

Today, we're off to shop on the very famous Rodeo Dr. If I've learned anything this week of entertaining guests, it's that these ladies aren't afraid to shop! Better go get my walking shoes on because here we go again!

Day 395-396 - September 13-14, 2010

Day 395 was a wonderful girls day of sight seeing, shopping, and great food.

Today, I can't believe my little guy is going off to preschool. Was it not just yesterday that I held him in my arms for the very first time? While he's thrilled to be embarking on his exciting new adventure all by himself, I sit thousands of miles away wishing I was there to hold his hand. My little nephew's all grown up.

Have a great first day of school, Micah-man!

John 1:16

From the fullness of grace we have received one blessing after another.

Day 393 - September 11, 2010

Do you think it's time to dust?

Don't answer that. YUCK! I can't believe I let it get so bad. There's nothing like company coming to force me to finally tackle my long cleaning list.

Awwww...much better!

Day 391 - September 9, 2010

I'm a little obsessed when it comes to freebies. I follow a lot of frugal bloggers that link up each and every free sample for shampoo, conditioner, face cream, body wash, and the list goes on. I have a hard time passing up the opportunity to receive new products in the mail. So as you an imagine, my bathroom cabinet is filled with samples. I recently decided it was time to start putting these samples to use in any way that I could.

Aside from making great body wash and shaving cream, I've learned that shampoo samples are perfect for cleaning sinks, bathtubs, and make-up brushes. My make-up brushes haven't been this soft or clean since I first bought them! Bring on the samples!

Hamilton Beach Panini Press Sandwich Maker Review

We have this favourite restaurant around here. It serves hand-tossed salads, piping hot soup served in freshly baked bread bowls, and delicious sandwiches. But the reason we keep going back is for their hot paninis! You see, last year, my husband fell in love with a chipotle chicken panini and has been begging me to recreate it for him since that first taste-bud-blowing experience. So, when CSN Stores once again extended me the opportunity to review any product from one of their 200+ online stores, I knew we'd be adding a panini press to our ever growing family of kitchen appliances.

The Hamilton Beach Panini Press Sandwich Maker is the perfect addition to our home. No more cold sandwiches for us. We're sticking with hot-on-the-inside and perfectly-toasted-on-the-outside panini sandwiches! With a preheat light that lets you know when you're ready to grill and an adjustable top press to accommodate those monster paninis, this machine is both simple and effective. Plus, with grills on both sides of the press, there is no need to flip your sandwich the way you do in a skillet or frying pan.

The nonstick grills not only leave beautiful grill marks on your sandwich, but also clean like a dream. With a soft sponge and a little bit of soapy water, your grill surfaces wipe clean.

That being said, I would suggest that future models have dishwasher-safe removable grill plates for those of us that are constantly on the go since this appliance cannot be submerged in water to soak in the case that melted cheese or other ingredients do get baked on. Also, there is no temperature control which would definitely come in handy if you were trying to melt the cheese on a super thick panini without burning the bread.

Paninis aren't the only thing this baby can make. The instruction manual comes with some delicious must-try recipes. Aside from a killer grilled cheese sandwich, you can make quesadillas, toast bagels, cook a pizza, and even make easy fruit turnovers. I love an appliance that can do so much!

Overall, the Hamilton Beach Panini Press Sandwich Maker gets an A in my books. And it definitely got the stamp of approval from my hubby yesterday when I finally made him that chipotle chicken panini he's been dying for!

To learn more about the Hamilton Beach Panini Press Sandwich Maker or to purchase one for yourself for only $49.99, please visit: http://www.householdappliances.com/Hamilton-Beach-25450-HMB1203.html

Disclosure: The Hamilton Beach Panini Press Sandwich Maker was provided to me at no cost, for review purposes, thanks to CSN Stores. All experiences and opinions expressed in this post are strictly my own and have not been influenced in any other way.

Day 385 - September 3, 2010

Sometimes I wish my life were this carefree.

Sometimes I wish I could just throw my hands up in the air, close my eyes, and let the wind take me wherever it will.

Sometimes I wish I could just swing away my worries.

Sometimes I wish I didn't have such big decisions looming over me.

But the fact is, we have life changing decisions to make. And while I worry about what the next few weeks will hold, I am also thankful that God has provided us with decisions to be made. It all seems so overwhelming right now, but months down the road, we'll have a clearer understanding and know that this time of uncertainty is just a step down the path God has set for us.

Day 384 - September 2, 2010

Do you realize what day it is today? Yes, it's September 2, 2010, but it's also 9/02/10.

90210!!

I cannot get the Beverly Hills 90210 theme song out of my head. Here is my little tribute to this famous zip code (snapped from a car last year).
